Cognitive Therapy
Human functioning can be described as the product of reciprocal interactions between personal and environmental variables. Cognitive skills are emphasized for solving problems. The beliefs that a client tells himself (cognitions/perceptions) influence his behavior, feelings, and response to problematic situations. Knowing how a person thinks is critical to understanding and influencing behavior change.
According to the cognitive model of treatment, most emotional and behavioral dysfunction is caused by incorrect beliefs and faulty thinking patterns. By identifying, evaluating, and changing dysfunctional thinking patterns and mistaken beliefs (cognitive restructuring), cognitive therapy helps clients function and solve problems more effectively. While the change in thinking is the focus of this approach, other changes in behavior, environment or physical functioning may also be necessary.
